The Advocate Dilemma The Advocate Series Book 4 edition by Teresa Burrell Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

There are very few book series that start with a free novel that hook me in so that I willingly want to pay for subsequent stories. The Advocate series is one. I always have had a fascination with the law. I even attended the first year of law school before I realized it was more of a past time than future career. Sabra is a strong feminine woman who is smart, attractive and a competent, caring attorney. Author Burrell's own legal experiences provide an authenticity to her heroine that keeps me coming back for more.
This is an excellent story. Well written with plenty of suspense, with just a little bit of romantic interest thrown in. Anyone who just likes to read a good story will enjoy this book. There is nothing about it that I didn't like.
This is a dark story of undercover police work regarding young children and the johns who exploit them. I struggled to get to the end but couldn't do it.
The story is about child advocacy and the role of the lawyer in the court system. It is a story that needs to be told, over and over again because so many parents are self-involved and immature, creating an unstable life and future for the children they have, and ensuring a continual repetitive cycle for future generations. In this way, the author provides a service that needs to be addressed. She also touches upon an all too common problem of abuse and the psychogical fall out that comes from such experiences. Socialization problems and learning disorders, often is attributable to such cases, and is too often slide over in the lives of these victims.

The author's description of the primary character's friendships and male relationships appears somewhat out of kilter. It seemed difficult to bring them closer into a balance or was somewhat out of focus. I would say that these areas did not have the conviction that her expertise in addressing the court or investigative storyline did. But, taken as a whole, it is fast moving story and enjoyable.
I have not read the other books in the series so can only base this review on the one I have read. I almost gave it a four star review. The author writes well. The editing is well done. Dealing with horrible subject matters the author only provides sufficient details to understand what happened without being overly grim or graphic. The mystery is well done with enough clues to begin to suspect early on what happened without being certain until the reveal. The reason I gave it a three instead of a four is because finally it was just too much. So many horrible things happen and most of them happen because they are necessary for the plot line but there are others added just to be added in and it all became simply too much. The restraint demonstrated in telling the story is overcome by the excess in the story itself. I was interested in reading more of the series but at this point I may have just had an overload on how bad people can be. Is it realistic? Probably from a family court perspective or a social service perspective it is all too real.
Sabre is the court advocate for 2 abused boys whose parents are drug users. Sabre is having a normal day until she walks into her office. A cross her desk is a dead man. Her friend Bob identifies the man as his female clients husband. Bob'so client is the boys mother and the dead man is boys father. The story gets interesting when Bob's client accuse him of sexual harshing her. The detective in charge of the case has a beef with JP from when they were rockey cops and since Bob is a friend does look very had for other suspects. Sabre's minor have info to help Bob but she cannot betray h r r clients. She and JP look for other suspectstuff when Bob is arrested. They learn who the murderer is but have to tread carefully.
I love this whole series. The books are predictable and fairly unsophisticated, but I truly enjoy the characters. Maybe I like these books because I've done this work and Burrell makes the issues of her job come alive. Not great literature, or even great mystery, but great fun nevertheless,
